Why do we have seasons?

Have you ever wondered why we have different seasons throughout the year?
Many people are surprised to learn that the changing seasons are due to the Earth’s tilt and its orbit around the sun!
The Earth is tilted on its axis by about 23.5 degrees, which is what causes the differences in temperatures and climates from season to season.
Depending on where the Earth is in its orbit, one side of the planet will receive more or less direct sunlight and experience warmer or cooler temperatures.
In the Northern Hemisphere, when the Earth is closer to the sun in its orbit during the summer, we get longer days and more direct sunlight, leading to warmer temperatures.
During the winter months, the Earth is farther away from the sun, resulting in shorter days and less direct sunlight.
This causes colder temperatures.
The same cycle happens in reverse in the Southern Hemisphere!
In autumn and winter, the Southern Hemisphere receives more direct sunlight and experiences warmer temperatures.
In spring and summer, they get less direct sunlight and cooler temperatures.
This cycle of the Earth’s orbit is what leads to our four unique seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter!
Each season brings with it a unique set of opportunities for fun and exploration, so take advantage of them all!

What happens in each season?

When it comes to the four seasons, there’s something special about each one! Kids love experiencing the changing of the seasons and all that comes with it. Here’s a closer look at the fun activities and exciting adventures they can enjoy in each season.
Autumn: Autumn is a great time to get outdoors and explore the changing leaves. Kids can go on nature hikes to find vibrant red, orange, and yellow leaves, and rake them into piles for jumping and having fun. They can also gather colourful leaves to create art projects, like pictures or collages. And don’t forget about pumpkin picking! Most pumpkin patches offer other autumn activities like hayrides, petting zoos, and corn mazes.
Winter: During winter, kids can go sledding or make snowmen in their own backyard or at a nearby park. Ice skating is another popular winter activity that kids of all ages can enjoy. You can also bundle up and take a family walk to admire the snow-covered trees and crunchy snow under your feet. And don’t forget about building a cosy fort indoors to relax with some hot cocoa and read stories.
Spring: In springtime, kids can start planting flowers and vegetables in their garden. It’s a great way to teach them about the natural process of growing plants from seeds and caring for them. Kids can also explore the outdoors by birdwatching or going on bug safaris. As temperatures warm up, you can also take a day trip to the beach for some sun, sand, and surf.
Summer: Summertime is full of adventure! Kids can have fun exploring nearby nature trails, going camping, or visiting nearby lakes or rivers for swimming and fishing. You can also check out amusement parks and zoos for thrilling rides and animal encounters. Don’t forget about the classics like bike rides, trips to the ice cream shop, or family picnics in the park. No matter what season it is, there’s always plenty of fun activities for kids to enjoy!
